How to Clean White Kitchen Cabinets That Have Yellowed

White kitchen cabinets are a popular choice for homeowners who want a bright, clean, and modern kitchen. But over time, especially in busy kitchens, those cabinets can start to yellow. Whether it’s due to cooking grease, sunlight, or simple aging, yellowed cabinets can make your kitchen look less fresh. If you’re wondering how to clean white kitchen cabinets that have yellowed, RR Pro Painting is here to help.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through why do white cabinets turn yellow, how to clean them effectively, and when it might be time to consider repainting or refinishing.

Why Do White Kitchen Cabinets Turn Yellow?

Before learning how to clean yellowed cabinets, it helps to understand what causes the discoloration. Here are the most common reasons:

1. Cooking Grease and Steam

Daily cooking releases moisture and oils into the air, which gradually accumulate on cabinet surfaces. Even with a range hood or fan, the residue can stick to paint or laminate, turning it yellow.

2. Sunlight Exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from sunlight can degrade paint pigments and finishes over time. This is a common reason why upper cabinets near windows begin to look yellow.

3. Age and Oxidation

Paint finishes naturally oxidize over time. Even if you don’t cook much, older white cabinets may yellow simply due to aging materials.

4. Low-Quality Paint

Some older or low-grade paints yellow more quickly, especially in areas with high humidity or poor ventilation.

How to Clean White Kitchen Cabinets That Have Yellowed

If the yellowing is surface-level and not deep in the paint, you may be able to restore the bright white look without a full refinishing job. Follow these cleaning steps for best results.

Step 1: Start with Gentle Cleaning

Sometimes, all your cabinets need is a good, non-abrasive cleaning.

Step 2: Use a Vinegar and Baking Soda Paste

For tougher yellow stains, try a natural cleaner using baking soda and white vinegar.

Step 3: Try a Commercial

Degreaser (If Needed)
If natural solutions aren’t cutting it, a store-bought degreaser may help.

How to Prevent White Cabinets from Yellowing Again

Once you’ve cleaned your cabinets, here are a few simple ways to keep them looking bright:

Clean Regularly

Wipe down your cabinets weekly using a mild soap solution to keep dirt and grime at bay. This prevents buildup before it can cause discoloration.

Use Your Ventilation

Using an exhaust fan or range hood during cooking reduces the amount of grease and moisture released into the air.

Protect from Sunlight

Install light-filtering shades or UV-blocking window film if your cabinets are near direct sunlight.

Repaint with High-Quality Paint

If your cabinets are older and still yellow after cleaning, it may be time to repaint them. Use a non-yellowing, high-quality enamel paint for lasting results.

When Cleaning Isn’t Enough

Sometimes, thorough cleaning may not be enough to restore white cabinets that have yellowed over time. The stain may be too deep, especially if the finish is worn or damaged.

Here are a few signs it’s time for professional help:

  • The yellowing is patchy or streaked.
  • Paint is cracking, chipping, or peeling.
  • You’ve tried cleaning, but the cabinets still look dull or discolored.

In these cases, repainting or refinishing the cabinets may be the best option.

The crew was exceptional!!! They arrived on time, worked non-stop, did a fantastic job and finished 2-days earlier than predicted. Left the place clean every day. Highly recommend them. I could not be happier with the way everything came out.

RR Pro Painting did an exceptional job on our exterior paint project. This is an older two-story house, and the prep work alone was extensive. They sanded thoroughly, handled all the surface prep correctly, and didn’t cut corners. The final result looks fantastic and completely refreshed the house. Professional, detail-oriented, and worth every dollar. I would absolutely recommend them.

Rodrigo and his team were an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish. They were patient, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all our questions throughout the process. It can be really hard to envision what your house will look like before the paint goes on, but they made us feel completely at ease with their guidance and expertise. Their attention to detail and professionalism were clear in every step of the job. The finished result exceeded our expectations and truly transformed our home. We couldn’t have picked a better company and highly recommend Rodrigo and his team to anyone looking for quality painters.

Initial I thought the quoted price a bit high, but when I see the crew comes on time each day, doing very good job that they are assigned to do. Clean up before they leaves the site each day. After I saw the quality of their work, I think costing a little more was worthies. I would recommend to give them a chance

I am so happy with the quality of painting as well as the great paint used, Sherwin-Williams. I would give them more than five stars if I could and will definitely be using them again to paint my rental house. They were also relatively quick because they had a large crew, were great at covering things so there was no mess. And they primed all surfaces prior to painting even though there was already paint. Thank you Rodrigo!

These guys did a great job! I had the cabinets in my entire house done plus the stair railing (which was a big job). They completed in 2.5 weeks with an Easter break in between so it was really only about 2 weeks. They were extremely courteous, worked around people and animals in the house, and cleaned up after themselves. I highly recommend them.
